Noah re-read the page. He couldn't stop. Even though Rex let him read his journals, Noah couldn't fight the compulsion to slip away just one. It was because of this page- this page written to his someday self, devoid of his memories, that Noah had to keep it.

“…that day, I realized, when I lose my memories again, when the slate gets wiped clean, it’ll be the same for Noah, too. Only worse. Because while I’m not going to remember anything about him, he’s going to remember everything about me. And those times, those laughs, those smiles, he’s the only one who’s going to know what they meant to us. There isn’t going to be anyone there who can share those moments with him.

So while I’m starting all over on our relationship, so will Noah. Only he’s going to have that extra baggage from what we used to have, which can’t be exactly the same as we re-do it.

I used to wonder if Noah was okay with that. He likes to act pretty tough a lot of the time with this sort of thing, so that I don’t worry. But I think deep down it bothers him as much as it does me. Pretty cute, huh?

One time though, I wasn’t too chicken to ask him about it. And do you know what he said? Heh, this will tell you what kind of guy Noah is…” Rex had drawn a little cartoony, grinning face before indenting to the next line.

“He said this totally normally. Like what we were talking about didn’t involve our relationship spiraling down into a dark abyss of uncertainty and depression. Haha, I guess he picked that up from me. But anyway, so he said:

‘Well…I don’t know about that. Don’t you consider it kind of lucky?’

Lucky, he says. Lucky! At the time I was kinda miffed at him, but, then he goes on with:

‘I mean, you get to re-live the best part about being in love, right? Which is falling into it in the first place.’ ”

On the page of the journal, there was a kind of peculiar ink mark on the next line. Like when a person is starting to write something, but they stop before even a single letter can be made. Then it starts up again a little further on so it doesn’t look ugly with that accidental mark.

“…Can you believe that? That’s the kind of guy you love. It might take a while to get past the snarky attitude and pride, but underneath it all is the kind of guy that can say stuff like that and make you feel like you’re the luckiest person alive. I don’t think I could have made it this far without being a gloomy mess if not for all the dorky stuff I get to hear every once in a while from him.

So don’t mess it up, okay? I don’t care if you don’t remember a single thing about him. You’re in love with the guy. Head over heels for him. Doesn’t matter if you don’t believe it. That’s just how it is. And if for some crazy reason you don’t fall in love with him, I don’t care how impossible it is, I’ll find some way to kick your ass. Do you have any idea how long it took and how hard it was to finally get him to say ‘yes’ to going out with me? Well, maybe I’ll tell that story in the next entry. But it was difficult. I don’t think I ever worked so hard for something in my entire life. That jerk can be just as stubborn as me, sometimes, you know? So seriously, don’t mess it up.

You love him more than anything.”

Noah quietly laughs to himself, happy, moved and in awe. He laughs at himself. He's speechless.
